Yohimbe Vs Yohimbine

Yohimbe and Yohimbine are quite popular on the market recently, either being featured as an ingredient or being sold as a pure extract. The most commercial usages of the two are for an aphrodisiac, treating erectile dysfunction, and more recently as a dietary weight-loss supplement. Every so often, though, the two words are being used interchangeably. However, you should be aware that Yohimbe and Yohimbine are actually two different things. So, what are the differences between Yohimbe and Yohimbine?

Yohimbe is the well-known name of Pausinystalia johimbe, a plant species native to western and central Africa. So, if a product is talking about Yohimbe extract, then the extract is supposedly derived from the plant. Usually, Yohimbe extract is taken from the wood and bark. Yohimbe wood and bark are used for various purposes, from making firewood, construction, tinctures for traditional medicine, and dietary supplements. Nevertheless, Yohimbe extract can contain various elements. The main active ingredient is Yohimbine, but there are also other alkaloids, many with undefined properties, so it is still not completely proven for safety. Among these alkaloids are corynanthine, an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker, and raubasine.

Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid derived from the bark of Yohimbe plant. Even so, in 1958, Yohimbine has been successfully synthesized by Van Tamelen, so Yohimbine may not always be acquired from the plant. Yohimbine is a specific chemical substance, so, when a product is talking about Yohimbine, we expect that the other contained substances in the Yohimbe extract, especially the ones that have not been identified for the possible effects, are not brought along. Yohimbine has been widely used in veterinary drugs to reverse sedation in dogs and deer. Yohimbine has also been studied as a potential erectile dysfunction treatment, and also has been used as dietary supplements for improving sexual function or for weight-loss by increasing the metabolism rate of the body. Nevertheless, the number of scientific studies and researches about the effectiveness of Yohimbine is still minuscule. Yohimbine itself may have some side effects. In smaller doses, it can increase blood pressure through vasoconstriction. In bigger doses, though, it reduces blood pressure instead by vasodilation.
